The Education and Science Society, Inc. (ESS) is a non-profit, non-political educational organization, registered since 1980 as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization in the State of New York.

Our Mission - to promote understanding between the peoples of the United States and China, and to promote human and social development in rural China by raising literacy levels and improving the quality of education.

Our Goals - support education in rural China, raise the quality of teaching and learning in rural schools, and help ensure that rural children have equal opportunities for education.

Our Programs - Since 1988, ESS has planned and coordinated a series of programs under the general framework of the Support Education in Rural China (SERC) Program Series. The Program series focuses on three major themes -- providing readng and informational material to rural schools; improving the quality of teaching and learning in rural schools; and providing financial assistance to rural students. Program activities have evolved over the past decades, adapting to the changing needs of education in rural China.

Our Beneficiaries - Our beneficiaries are the students, teachers, school principals, educaion workers as well as the community at large in remote and poor villages in rural China. Our efforts, in terms of not only material support but also the care and concern of our sponsors and volunteers, have made a tremendous difference in the lives of many rural children and teachers.

Our Sponsors - Our sponsors include private individuals, non-profit organizations, foundations, private enterprises, social groups and institutions. They contribute to specific activities in the SERC Program, and receive regular feedback on the projects or students they support.

Our Staff - All ESS staff in China and the US are volunteers who have devoted their time and service to the SERC Program without receiving any pay. They are mostly professionals and experienced educators. The effective implementation of the projects is their only reward.

Volunteers in the US, comprising a core group of 20 professionals and about 60 supportive individuals, are responsible for planning, fundraising, coordination and supervision of the SERC Program Series.
