Since 1993, ESS has worked with educational institutions in China to organize conferences/workshops in one or two provinces each year for basic education researchers, administrators, principals and teachers. Professional educators from outside China are invited to share their knowledge and experience in pedagogy, education reform and current trends in educational development.

The objective of the conferences is to provide short-term intensive training for participants to enhance their understanding of education concepts, improve their teaching methods, and promote the exchange of ideas and sharing of experiences among educators from the rural areas in China. Hundreds of participants attended these conferences each year.

Forty-eight basic education conferences have been held since 1993. Click to view a list of the co-sponsoring institutions.

Papers presented at the conferences are documented in CDs/DVDs and made available to rural schools, so that school principals and teachers who were unable to attend the conference can have access to the presentations.

In addition, ESS also puts together reference material for teachers, as well as teaching aids such as charts for classroom use.
