In 2012, ESS worked with partner institutions to organize 16 camps for rural school children in China. Twelve of these were Science camps, and three were Music and General Activity camps. One other camp was a Reading and Writing camp, with a special program for children and their teachers from rural areas in Gansu, Neimenggu and Sichuan.

About fourteen hundred participants enrolled in these camps, held during July or August in 2012. Most of the children were students from elementary schools or middle schools, and a small number were senior secondary school students.

Camp leaders and volunteers from universities in China were responsible for planning and conducting the programs for most of the Science camps. The three Music and General Activity camps were jointly conducted by a team from the National Chengchi University in Taiwan and volunteers from local institutions/universities where the camp site was located.
